Order of the Star of India

The Order of the Star of India was instituted by HM Queen Victoria in 1861, and enlarged 1866, 1875, 1897, 1902, 1911, 1915, 1920, 1927, and 1939.

The dignity of Knight Grand Commander was conferred on Princes or Chiefs of India, or upon British subjects for important and loyal service rendered to the Indian Empire; the second and third classes were for services in the Indian Empire of not less than thirty years in the department of the Secretary of State for India .

It consists of the Sovereign, the first class of Knights Grand Commanders, the second class of Knights Commanders, and the third class of Companions.

No appointments to this Order have been made since 14 August 1947 .
